I can confirm your souvenir doll is scandinavian, she represents Norway, her costume is from Hardanger. The doll most likely is made cheaply in Hong Kong or Taiwan for the european souvenir market.

This doll was found inside a wall of a 17th century rectory in mid Wales when it was being renovated.

The doll is definitively not dressed in Welsh costume.
See looks South European, maybe Italian or Greek. Possibly dating from the 1950's/1960's.

'I have these two walking Dutch dolls. Is it possible for you to tell me anything about them, and are they saleable? There do not appear to be any markings on either doll. The size of the dolls is approximately 36-37 cm. I look forward to hearing from you. With thanks Jean Kernick'.

Answer:

They are a matching pair of dutch dolls dressed in the costume of the famous fishingtown Volendam. The Volendam costume is often seen as the ultimate representative of dutch national costume, allthough the Netherlands has many other regional costumes. The dolls look to have some age to them, I don't regonize a maker or brand but they seem to be of good quality with lovely faces. I think you could easily find someone who will appreciate them. Good luck with finding a good home for them!

Help! I bought this doll at a yard sale years ago. I suspect she is from the Netherlands. She has china (bisque) head, arms and lower legs; the body is some sort of semi-hard material. She wears knee-length white cotton pantaloons. Because she is an inexpensive doll, but has the china parts, I think she must be fairly old, perhaps 1930? From what province?

She is from Volendam in The Netherlands but her costume is far from authentic!

Decades of Delight!

After World War II when France was devastated my family sent care packages to a French family whose husband and father had been killed, leaving a widow with four children. We were especially interested because my husband had served in France for over a year. In 1985 we visited the family in France and among other expressions of gratitude they gave us four small plastic dolls in regional costumes and a larger one dressed in the costume of the Midi-Pyrenees province where the mother and daughter took part in folk-dancing. Later, a granddaughter emigrated here and became a citizen.
The dolls are not particularly valuable in themselves, but huge in

appreciation of the experience and the family’s gratitude. They joined my collection of nearly 300 ethnic or folk dolls. I house them in shallow cabinets of glass doors and shelves, set into the walls of the bedroom wing hall where they can be enjoyed every day.

In 1924 when I was four years old, one of my grandmothers took a “Mediterranean Cruise” and brought back seven souvenir dolls. That became a nucleus for my collection. My mother enjoyed searching for additions to the collection on her travels. Both grandmothers (I was the first granddaughter on each side!) found more dolls, and I hope they had as much pleasure in that as I have had in all these years.
As a military family, we had friends who brought dolls from the many countries where they were stationed. Through the years, I’ve had the joy of receiving gifts of dolls from traveling friends and family and to seek out special dolls myself in other lands. I avoided the ubiquitous plastic tourist dolls, but searched for dolls with handwork and individuality.
Two of my dolls predate the grandmother’s-cruise collection. My mother had a cloth “Mammy” doll, which I have been told is a Horsman doll, pre-1920. She also had a Japanese doll which had been given to her by her father on his return from New York when she was a child, probably in 1905. It is striking how similar that doll is to a doll I found myself in Japan half a century later. That same year I bought for my daughter’s birthday a large cloth doll which I am told may be an Ada Lum doll. Our Japanese housekeeper thought it was not dressed appropriately and made a lovely kimono for it herself.
Native American dolls are favorites of mine. Among them is a Cherokee doll, carved in 1986 by Richard Crowe and dressed by his wife, Berdina; two of their dolls are in the Smithsonian Museum of the American Indian. Two small charming and unique dolls were made entirely of yarn by Navajo women to raise money for the Presbyterian mission school for Indians in Ganado, Arizona. That school closed in 1968. In trying to get more information about them this year, I learned that several Navajo individuals remembered the dolls, but the makers had, in their phrase, “entered eternal rest.”
But my favorite Indian doll is a well-worn leather doll, crudely made with bead features and horsehair wig. Some small Indian girl cherished it many years ago.
My collection suffered two losses. In 1984 while we were away thieves broke in and stole seven dolls. It was obvious that they had stood in front of a case and just grabbed the ones handiest. Four of them were unique hand-dressed dolls from Palestine, Turkey and Italy, from the nucleus group. Two were a delightful pair my son had brought from Norway. I was so distressed that I put up signs in the city flea markets, which was probably not a smart thing to do. However, a few months later a woman called to ask if I had recovered any. I sadly said I hadn’t. She told me the same thing had happened to her, but that she actually found two of her dolls in the manager’s office of one of the flea markets.
A few years later I loaned dolls to a friend to decorate dinner tables for an international guests’ dinner and unfortunately four of them disappeared. My friend was devastated. Me, too!
Special memories include a Portuguese fisherman doll bought in Nazare, Portugal, on the annual day the fishing fleets set sail; dolls from war-torn Viet Nam and Thailand brought by Army and Air Force combatants, including our son; Irish dolls from a beloved Irish teacher-nun; a Hungarian doll one grandmother found while searching for family in Hungary; a Polish doll purchased in Krakow when our grandson worked in a small town in Poland.
It has been and continues to be such a pleasure to glance at my dolls and remember the fascinating city or village where I found this one, the cherished family and friends (many now gone) who brought that one. And to delight in the careful workmanship and handicraft, the sheer beauty and originality of each special one.

Lenci Doll made in Italy

I have been trying to find information about my Lenci doll. Does anyone know more about her?

She has her original label with 'PF/2' in handwriting at the back.

Unfortunately she has quite some mothdamage at the back of her headscarf, in the fold. There is a little hole in the back of her skirt as well and one to the side of a slipper strap. The rest is fine. She is a cutie!
